Workshop Preparation

This site page has been created to assist those attending any of the Alternative Firing workshops.

Here you will find how to prepare your ceramic test pieces prior to the workshop.

Lets Begin...

Preparing your ceramics...

The most effective way to prepare your surface for any smooth ceramic items is to either burnish the surface to a shine, or apply terra sigilatta and polish the item.  Burnshing can be accomplished by using a smoothing tool  (smooth stones, glass or metal) to compress the surface and remove all surface roughness.   This is usually done at the hard leather or bone dry stage of dryness.  There are plenty of YouTube and other videos on how this can be done.  Below are two videos by Jason Dunn  that I like. The first burnishing is done on hard leather hard pottery, the second is done on bone dry pottery.  Both are very helpful.
